my daughter just recieved a teddy bear hamster last night from my friend who's daughter was "doing bad" so she gave it away to us...Everybody who see's him says i think he is in a bird cage and when they say that, i agree...Is it o.k. if he stays in it another 2 weeks until my daughter saves her allowance to buy another cage? The hamster looks happy in it, it has a wheel, water bottle, food dish, toliet paper roll he goes in and out of, a salt wheel, etcHamster in bird cage?
It's totally fine. As long as there's nothing in there that can hurt him, and as long as he can't escape. I actually prefered bird cages for my mice because mice are natural climbers, and the bird cage gave them plenty of room to climb in.
Hamsters don't climb the bars like mice do (or at least, not nearly as well), but a bird cage is still fine for them. If your daughter wants to save her money, she doesn't even have to get a new cage for him, unless you feel like he really needs it.
my only recommendation would be an exercise ball so it can get out of the cage. they really need a lot of exercise. the size of their home doesn't matter much -- i would just make sure it is allowed plenty of exercise. you can pick up one for about 5 dollars and let your daughter pick out a better home so she has a concept of how much she needs to save.Hamster in bird cage?
yea, as long as the hamster can't fit out threw the wires there is nothing wrong with that. I did that with my pet rats before and they loved it. Also, if you go out and buy one of those parrot ropes that cling from one side of the cage to the other, the hamster might like to climb up and down it! My rats did it all the time, they took food all the way up there to sit and eat it too, it was really cute =D
If the cage works out alot for you, maybe you wont even need to buy a new cage [what ever you do, dont get a plastic hamster cage! It will chew through] As long as the bird cage isn't too small too.
~Have fun!
Hamsters don't really need a lot of space to live, and a wire mesh bird cage is an adequate home, but the area around the cage will be messy... The little rodents tend to burrow under their bedding, and throw it out of the cage. A cage with solid plastic or glass walls will make it easier to keep the surrounding room area clean.Hamster in bird cage?
When I was a kid, the hamster cage I bought was a wire cage with a removable bottom (for easy changing of cedar). As long as the wires are close enough it cannot squeeze out, it should be ok.
it will be fine as long as he cant fit inbetween the wire otherwise u dont have to rush to save up keep it in there for like 1 month or a month and a half then get a really nice cage
yeah its fine. hamsters can stay anywhere as long as theres no chance itll fall out. i had a hamster once and we kept him in a fish tank (with no fish or water in it of course) and he lived for 5 years in the same tank (it was huge)
There is nothing at all wrong with keeping a hamster in a cage for another animal as long as the cage is safe and secure. With a bird cage, you have two considerations First, can the hamster open the door? If so, find a latch to put on it. I recommend a latch from the hardware store so you won't have to until garbage ties or something when you open the door. Second, watch the sliding tray at the bottom of the cage. Sometimes, hamsters can push those open and get out. Even if it is secure, they will often pee in the corner of a cage, and it will leak down under that tray and begin to stink.
