Awful grinding when turning steering wheel?

Even when stationary, but more pronounced when turning a corner at lowish speeds.

If I rev the engine, whilst stationary the grinding doesnt seem to get any louder, unless I start turning the steering wheel..then i can hear it "pitch up" in line with engine revs. If I dont touch the steering wheel whilst revving theres no grinding so Im pretty sure the engine itself is ok.

I'm pretty sure it's the Power Steering Pump, i've checked the PS fluid reservoir and it's full so I dont think theres a leak.

I'm yet to check the belt for tension, but it sounds more like the pumps dying..horrible grinding sound, not happy driving it at all.

Any ideas for cost (ball park) - based on UK garage prices, I still have an extended warranty so Im hopinh they will cover it, but you know what them fekkers are like, they never want to pay out.

fyi: It's a 2001 Ford Cougar 2.5

Thanks for any pointers/infoAwful grinding when turning steering wheel?
Usually not much alternative to a bad pump with all the grinding going on and full resavoir. Works every time
What it actually was, was the Power Steering Oil Cooler was leaking, causing the Power Steering fluid level to drop, obviously giving the symptoms reported above.

I dont think all cars have them, but lucky me...mine did.

Awful grinding when turning steering wheel?
Power steering pump is either low on fluid, or is about to go out.
it could be your CV joints. check if your boots are cracked, torn, or leaking grease.Awful grinding when turning steering wheel?
when pwr steering pumps go bad they whine more so than grind.

when front cv joints are bad they click %26amp; grind.mainly heard when turning sharp..sounds like your pump is bad, like the bearings going out of it. as far as warranty goes (good luck) it may be covered hard to say. If you don,t have any warranty go to a junk yard and buy a used pwr steering pump.if you want to save some $.
have you had it greased? the cv joints maybe? might be the steering box
im not really sure but my jeep cherokee limited does this too so i wish i could help but i wish you the best !
