Happy Friday R&P, Don't you know fate has a funny way of coming around? (#14)?

Hi Everybody.

Well, we're inside the top 20 on my Top 101 Mix Tape Rules countdown. "Mix tape rules" simply means that I limited myself to one song per band/artist.

Here are the recent selections:

25. the Smiths - Handsome Devil

24. John Lennon - Watching The Wheels

23. A.C. Newman - On The Table

22. The Roots - The Seed V. 2.0

21. Wilco - Theologians

20. Grandaddy - Chartsengrafs

19. the Folk Implosion - Natural One

18. the Decemberists - the Tain

17. Stevie Wonder - We Can Work It Out (Beatles Cover)

16. Tall Tales and the Silver Lining - Born Down By the Side

15. Belle and Sebastian - Simple Things

So, we're inside of 15, heading towards the top ten. For number 14 I went with the band who I would answer on most days, maybe everyday, as my favorite active band and a song from a top 5 of the decade album in my book. There is a very cool sort of Rain Dogs era Tom Waits quality to this tune that I really enjoy, mostly in the (shoot Wire has told me his name a couple times and I can't think of it) lead guitar style. I love the vocal performance. I just love this tune. I hope you do too.

Dr. Dog - the Beach

So, what did you think? What's your favorite tune by Dr. Dog if you know their work? Who is your favorite active band?

Thanks a lot everybody for keeping this alive all this time. I've been having a lot of fun with it. You guys are the best.

Also, sorry about yesterday. I had to leave work early because someone was coming by to do some home repairs and I lost track of time to get the question out. I may post two today, but most likely I will just let yesterday fall to the side and get back on track with today's.|||happy friday, prof

i will forgive you being awol yesterday - hope your repairs last as long as this tape.

so, dr dog. hmm.

i have splinters in my backside from this uncomfortable fence.

i may listen to more, and hopefully fall on one side or the other.

Happy belated Friday and Wow. I've never heard of Dr. Dog but they're great. I just put a few of their albums on hold at the library so I'll definitely be checking them out in the near future. Thanks.|||Alright I'll be honest - I keep seeing you mention these guys and never really gave them a chance - by what I heard here a little digging may be in order|||Hey Prof, great, great tune.

In the beginning, I wasn't completely sold on their latest release, Fate. I don't know why that is now. I love this album, and agree with you that it vaulted itself into my top releases of the decade. Just with most of what I've been listening to lately, I owe that to you.

My favorite track is "Army of Ancients".

"The Beach" does have a Waits quality to it. They draw from a lot of inspirations...I hear The Band, Beatles, Beach Boys, George Harrison solo efforts, etc. But, at the same time, I find them very refreshing and original.

Great track, glad they made it that high up on your list.

Oh, and I'm going to see Dr. Dog in May in Philadelphia. I'm so damn excited for it.

Favorite active band? Tough one...I really can't say. I could name a ton of bands. I'm horrible with rankings and choosing definitively.

Have a great weekend.|||Greetings, Prof :-)

Very strange and interesting that was. And definitely made me think of Tom Waits.

Since, of course, I've never heard of Dr. Dog, I can only comment on my favorite 'active' band. REM (but Dave Matthews Band comes close, and would probably 'win' tomorrow...)

And please... no apologies about missing a day! This is awesome just as it is. 87 songs down... that's almost 3 months' worth!!! Been enjoying it all along the way.

Happy loooooooong weekend, Prof :-)|||one of my favorites from that album. thanks again for introducing that band to me in the first place.

i think my favorite is "weekend" or "die die die." maybe those 3 songs are co-favorites.

oh, and marc ribot is the guitarist who sometimes plays with waits you are trying to think of.

lemme post this thing again:

dr. dog doing a really fun set at npr's tiny desk concert series

oh and favorite active band: right now i am thinking sharon jones and the dap kings... primarily because i'm a bit excited for the new album to come out in a couple months...|||Hi Prof

This is a first to me, like many other songs that you mentioned and it's not bad.It came across to me like I song I'd listen to on a rainy , depressing day .. like today actually.Fits my mood , like how it sounds, digg the lyrics , I'll be looking into Dr Dog more . Actually , I'll download the whole Fate album.

Have a cool Friday Prof
