My hamster wont stop chewing on his cage bars!!!?

Okay I have a hamster names mickey. He seems very happy, he has 2 wheels, a liitle house, tubes and a bag of treats, he's the cutest you'll ever see! Except one little problem =[ he constantly chews on his cage bars!! It drives me CRAZY at night! And I also think one of these days. he will finally make a hole in his cage! So I want to no...( Hold on mickeys chewing on his bars...) how do I get him to not chew on the bars?





Usally if mickey chews on the bars I grab him, like tickle his tummy. And then he usaully stops but when I go back to my bed he starts chewing again!


So how do get him to stop chewing?





Thxs any questions just ask=3|||you have to make sure your hamster has lots of other things to do because if he carry's on chewing on his bars it will kill him because when your hamster chews on his bars it will give him brain damage

good luck|||That's exactly what happened to mine on his first day at my house. It means that they want to come out for a while. Let him run around on your hands (obviously you need to tame him first). It means he's bored. You might want an exercise ball if you don't have a hamster proof area in your house. If he's never come out before, that means he's bored and needs a bigger space for exercise.





Hope I helped :-)|||there isnt anything you can do. mickey is exactly like my guinea pig, nellie. she will chew on her bars because it strengthens her teeth. thats exactly why mickey does it. just be patient with him. ALL rodents love chewing on things hard. especially their cage bars!|||It usually means they are bored.


Maybe you could try switching his toys around every now and then...a diffrent variety for him will keep him entertained.


I know that if I was stuck with the same old toys..I would get bored.





Try paper towel rolls,stuff them with toilet paper or paper towel...and put treats in the middle. That might help with some boredom.

Get him some really interesting toys, mine has a see saw or get him a play block, it's a little plastic box with holes all in it which he can climb in one hole and out whatever one he likes, they love them. Hamsters are intruiged by something as simple as toilet paper though!


Switch their toys around often (Although always leave a wheel in their). Eg, one night take out the tube and after a week put it back in and take out another toy, so he has a change and doesn't get bored. Make sure you get at least one more toy. And try to take him out his cage for at least 15 minutes, put him in his ball, (He has got a ball right?, If he hasn't he really needs one). And then handle him after hes run around in his ball.


Make sure he has mineral or wood blocks in his cage because hamsters teeth never stop growing and he needs something to keep them down.


Every time he chews the bars, blow him. Eventually he will assosiate the fact that every time he chews, hes blown. And when he comes off after you've blown him give him a hamster chocolate button or milk drop. Or if you don't have any give him some fresh veg like carrot or apple, then he will assosiate that when he stops chewing, he's rewarded.





I'm having the same problem with my hamster and it's working although it's annoying when you have to keep getting out of bed to blow on him so position his cage in front of your bed until the biting stops.
