Happy Friday R&P, Aren't we all a little insane when we're wounded? (#5)?

Hi Everybody.

Well, we're inside the top 10 on my Top 101 Mix Tape Rules countdown. "Mix tape rules" simply means that I limited myself to one song per band/artist.

Here are the recent selections:

25. the Smiths - Handsome Devil

24. John Lennon - Watching The Wheels

23. A.C. Newman - On The Table

22. The Roots - The Seed V. 2.0

21. Wilco - Theologians

20. Grandaddy - Chartsengrafs

19. the Folk Implosion - Natural One

18. the Decemberists - the Tain

17. Stevie Wonder - We Can Work It Out (Beatles Cover)

16. Tall Tales and the Silver Lining - Born Down By the Side

15. Belle and Sebastian - Simple Things

14. Dr. Dog - The Beach

13. the Pixies - Alec Eiffel

12. Dr. Octagon - Earth People

11. Elvis Costello - The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes

10. Elliott Smith - Condor Ave.

09. Simon and Garfunkel - The Big Bright Green Pleasure Machine

08. Radiohead - Paranoid Android

07. Built to Spill - I Would Hurt A Fly

06. Paul Simon - The Obvious Child

For number 5 I'm going to put out there a song that I am eternally grateful to a pretty mediocre movie for. You remember that movie where Ed Norton plays a priest, Ben Stiller plays a rabbi, and Jenna Elfman plays the girl that they both loved in their childhood? Well, it wasn't very good. Not so bad or anything. Just a movie really. Keeping the Faith, that's it. Anyways. I had forgotten about this song completely until I rented this one night, at a point in my life where I pretty much saw all the movies, and this Tom Waits tune comes on. One I knew and instantly remembered how much I loved even though I hadn't heard it or thought about it in years. Not only did that movie give me that specific song back, but it also reminded me how much I loved Tom Waits and started a big resurgance with his music in general. The movie featured an Elliott Smith tune as well. Anyways. This song is just beautiful. A wonderful song about how complicated love can be.

Tom Waits - Please Call Me Baby

-this was terribly disappointing because I've been hunting for quite a while and I can't get grooveshark to open and there is no youtube and don't get me started on myspace music. This last.fm link is the wrong version of the song, but it's the best we've got. If anyone can grab a better link to the real Heart of Saturday Night version I would be very grateful. Thanks)

So, what did you think? What's your favorite Tom Waits tune?

Tom Waits - Please Call Me Baby ( Heart of Saturday Night)

I went through a huge Waits period Prof and I can't recall hearing that song before, thanks so much for sharing it.

I can certainly "get it"

My Favorite Tom Waits tune is the opening track to my fave album by him, Singapore off the remarkable "Raindogs" album|||Hey Prof! Another great choice!

MA:

"Come On Up To The House"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GugzLSbO鈥?/a>|||hey prof,

i'm an uncultured philistine, obviously

hate it|||Hey Prof.

Love it, of course. Such a relaxing, piano-driven tune. One thing I love about Waits, and is true for this song, is I believe what he's saying.

Heart of Saturday Night, I actually don't own...which is funny because I still have 7 albums (9 if you can't the Orphans collection). I don't know what the other version sounds like, but this one does the job just fine.

My favorite Tom Waits tune? At the moment, I'll go with. I have a hard time with favorites. Right now, it's "Bottom of the World" off of Orphans: Disc 1.

Was it you, or maybe Huevo responsible for that? I don't know, but if you're unfamiliar, hope you enjoy.|||This has been a year of Tom Waits 'discovery' for me, Prof (thanks in humongous part to Nodumgys :-)

Love this song. Love how different he sounds all the time. I don't have a favorite ...yet.

And to answer the question... want to play by the "rules", after all ~ What a great way of putting it, huh? We ARE all a little crazy when we're wounded. On so many levels.

Thx, Prof. Happy Monday (I'm late haha)|||G'day Prof Anger,

Thank you for your question.

The piano has been drinking. This version dates from 1977.

Regards|||Hey Prof, never heard that one before, but loved it! I don't know if I could pick a favorite..maybe Cold Cold Ground or Anywhere I Lay My Head. Thanks for sharing, I'm looking forward to hearing the rest of the top 5!|||hi Prof, nice choice
