Hi Everybody.
Well, we're inside the top 10 on my Top 101 Mix Tape Rules countdown. "Mix tape rules" simply means that I limited myself to one song per band/artist.
Here are the recent selections:
25. the Smiths - Handsome Devil
24. John Lennon - Watching The Wheels
23. A.C. Newman - On The Table
22. The Roots - The Seed V. 2.0
21. Wilco - Theologians
20. Grandaddy - Chartsengrafs
19. the Folk Implosion - Natural One
18. the Decemberists - the Tain
17. Stevie Wonder - We Can Work It Out (Beatles Cover)
16. Tall Tales and the Silver Lining - Born Down By the Side
15. Belle and Sebastian - Simple Things
14. Dr. Dog - The Beach
13. the Pixies - Alec Eiffel
12. Dr. Octagon - Earth People
11. Elvis Costello - The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes
10. Elliott Smith - Condor Ave.
09. Simon and Garfunkel - The Big Bright Green Pleasure Machine
08. Radiohead - Paranoid Android
07. Built to Spill - I Would Hurt A Fly
06. Paul Simon - The Obvious Child
05. Tom Waits - Please Call Me Baby
For number 4, well what can I say. My favorite song by my favorite band. Showing a side of themselves that came on more towards the end of their run. A sort of deeper (sonically) smoothness. A hightened production used incredbly effectively. Pavement is a band of many faces, and I love them all, but I think this song shows off really the whole thing coming together at its peak. Though it came from the album before their last, which is my favorite, it serves as a perfect segway for what was to come. I love the way the B section plays out too. Anyways, I hope you like it.
Pavement - Transport is Arranged

So, what did you think? What's your favorite Pavement track? Record? If you're a Pavement fan, how do you like Steve Malkmus' solo work/work with the Jicks so far?
Thanks a lot everybody. I hope you all had a really great weekend.|||"I swung my fiery sword, I vent my spleen at the lord...."
That's my favorite part of a brilliant song. I've been waiting this entire countdown for Pavement!
It's so crazy, when I first joined Answers, I really had no clue who they were. I saw one of their albums (S%26amp;E) in my local library and had seen you mention them. Picked it up, fell in love, rest is history.
I wasn't that high on Brighten The Corners, but ever since the Nicene Creedence Edition, it's changed it. "Transport Is Arranged" is one of the highlights, along with many B-Sides we were treated with. Even the extended "Shady Lane", with the dream-like guitar part at the end of the song.
Prof, as I mentioned in a post prior to this, Wowee Zowee has really, really grown on me...to the point where it could be my favorite. The thing that I love about Pavement is every album is different, and I feel a constant pull towards a particular album, for any number of reasons. I can't stop listening to "Grave Architecture". And who can forget "Father To a Sister of Thought"? Song sounds nothing like Pavement, yet it sounds everything like Pavement...make sense?
My favorite Pavement track is "We Dance". The lyrics are amazing. It sounds so bleek, yet hopeful at the same time. I like Malkmus when he was going through this phase. Anyway, that is subject to change.
My favorite record? Well, Slanted always will have that special place. First one I listened to. I really appreciate Wowee, and I think I could go with that.
I love his work with the Jicks, and Real Emotional Trash is my favorite of the credited two.
My favorite album of his is the self-titled Stephen Malkmus. So many great tracks on that one.
I cannot wait to see the mighty Pavement live in September, in New York City. Wow.
Thanks Prof, Happy Monday.
Edit: Thanks a lot Punch, I appreciate that.|||Cold Roses, what a terrific answer!
just got to work, late for a meeting but will return to opine!|||Hey Prof!
I knew your fav Pavement song was "Transport is Arranged". Haha, I did not want to spill the beans. I am surprises it is number 4, I expected it to be number 1. I like Steve Malkmus solo stuff. He is a quality musician will always put out quality music. But like when the Beatles went solo their work will never measure up to the "band". Every member of Pavement really played their instruments well in great time. The guitarists work together great (while they were working together great) and played off each other and filled in the gaps.
Fav Pavement song: Circa 1762

I found myself sounding like a complete idiot a couple days ago (haha I know~ big surprise ;-) when I was trying to explain to someone that I bought tickets for a concert to a band that I really know nothing about, but... it was one of my 'internet friend's' favorite bands, and I liked his taste in music! :-D Plus, I'd asked a question about it and gotten very positive replies.... So... on June 25th at UC Berkeley's Greek Theatre ~ tickets still available (through Another Planet Entertainment) ~ I'm going to go see Pavement!! It's a general admission show and two tix are under $100, even with all the stupid fees. I've been meaning to mention this to you... but you and your wife should come!!! Get a room.... we'll meet you at the show :-D Or before.... I'm an excellent tour guide, and the show is on the UC Berkeley campus where I went to school. Seriously. It's a Friday. I'd take the day off.
I still don't own any Pavement, but I'll be looking to pick up a couple CDs soon...
Thanks for yet another awesome tune, Prof!!
**edit**
Awesome, Prof! Sounds like you've got most of your vacation time spoken for, but as it would just be a little weekend thing... well who knows? The missus might just go for it :-)
So for sure, it's an open invitation ~ I know where I'm gonna be that day! lol I'll keep my fingers crossed. It would be *very cool* to meet cha!!
**edit2**
Wowzer! What awesome vacations / choices you have before you... Yosemite or a warm sunny beach... *very* tough decision!! And congrats to your wife on getting a degree ~ any level/ any subject, it's a huge accomplishment ~ esp. as we get older and have houses and husbands and jobs to maintain... ask me. I know... got mine when I was 33! :-)
Vegas... Hawaii... I'm fairly jealous. Told my husband I'd stay home this year and work on the house... but now that vacation "season" is coming up... well, I'll probably try to lead him astray :-D He only gets one week, tho, and I get a bunch! So that's always challenging. I tend to go camping and go see my mom... and girlfriends. Yeah, I like to be on the go..|||great tune, i think i like shady lane off that album the best though
slanted and enchanted is one of my all time favorites, its hard to pull one song out cause i like the album so much as a whole
in mouth of a desert is a good track though
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14fMEDatD鈥?/a>|||good day, prof. hope it's going well.
oh dear. i think me and the countdown lost contact a few weeks back - the stuff i knew about has never touched me, the unknown bits have failed to move me, either.
that's from the only pavement album i've ever tried to listen to. i didn't get it then, i don't get it now.
so, no favourites to mention, sorry.
but this song has been on heavy rotation recently
my son john - the imagined village
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMpzWrDss鈥?/a>|||Hi Prof
awesome choice ! you have any idea how long it's been since I listened to Pavement ? okay you don't care I know , anyway it's been a couple of months . I'm liking this !
Fave Pavement tune is Here|||Hey Prof, I really liked that song. I actually hadn't heard it before, since I have yet to hear Brighten the Corners. I'm not sure about my all time favorite Pavement tune. I really love In the Mouth a Desert, and there's a quite a few from Wowee Zowee that would probably make my top 10 (Best Friends Arm, Pueblo, Extradition etc). As for favorite album, I'm pretty sure it's Wowee Zowee, but like I said I still have to hear Brighten the Corners (as well as Terror Twilight).|||hi Prof
nice pick, i love Pavement! i cant believe i never heard of them til about 3 months ago, they are amazing. I love Steve's solo stuff, its great too.
my fave Pavement songs are 'Here' and "Silence Kit'. and my fave album by them is "Slanted %26amp; Enchanted"
have a great Monday dude!
EDIT: dude i watched Half Baked today, i loved it. hilarious. thanks for the reccomendtion :)|||Hi Prof,
I've been wondering which Pavement song you'd pick and when they would make an appearance. (I expected them to be at #1 too.) Wowee Zowee is my favorite Pavement album. It's also my number one album of any band. But they have some fantastic EPs and Stray Slack is probably my favorite live album (although I suppose categorizing it as a "live album" is debatable) of all time. I'm not sure which song I'd pick. I suspect you can empathize since your Pavement love runs deep. When I try to choose an ultimate favorite song inevitably ten to twenty of their songs that I equally love come to mind. I can make a list of candidates: Grounded, AT%26amp;T, Elevate Me Later, Heaven Is A Truck, Fight This Generation, Frontwards, Gangsters and Pranksters. Kentucky Cocktail....so definitely one of those, maybe.
Unfortunately, I've never been able to get into Malkmus' solo stuff or Preston School of Industry. But I love the Silver Jews albums with SM.
Transport Is Arranged is a good pick. But in my opinion you can't go too wrong with any Pavement song.
I'm really happy that some R%26amp;Pers are going to see Pavement. I've seen them twice, once early in their career and once on the Terror Twilight tour. They were truly amazing both times. At the TT concert the animosity between Scott and Stephen was obvious. They bickered on stage then isolated themselves on opposite sides. But they still played beautifully. The music was incredible.

I do remember that the Pavement guys were supposed to play on The Natural Bridge...then they weren't. The rumor at the time was that Berman resented being considered a Pavement side-project instead of an entirely independent band and he resented the popularity and acclaim Pavement received because the SJs had been formed first. There were arguments so David removed them from the album and destroyed the recordings. But honestly I do think the SJ albums with the Pave guys are the best ones. That isn't a slight to Berman but praise for the combination and musical chemistry (I don't know what else to call it) of Berman and Malkmus.

Prof, were you ever a regular on The Pavement Message Board? I was and my name there was "Mother Mary" or "MM." Just curious if our paths have crossed cyberly before.|||Really great Pavement track! I got Brighten The Corners a few months ago but haven't had a lot of time lately to listen to it. Now that I know what I'm missing, I'm strongly motivated to hear the rest.
Finding out that so many people are just recently being introduced to Pavement makes me feel kinda old but I'm profoundly happy that they are getting new fans. I'm partial to Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain so my favorite song is off that release - "Unfair" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GqGNmcjW鈥?/a>
Wow, only 3 more to go. I'm eager to find out what they are!
