Happy Friday R&P, Have you been to a place called heavenly? (#18)?

Hi Everybody.

Well, we're inside the top 20 on my Top 101 Mix Tape Rules countdown. "Mix tape rules" simply means that I limited myself to one song per band/artist.

Here are the recent selections:

28. Sammy - Encyclopedi-ite

27. the Velvet Underground - Who Loves the Sun

26. Apollo Sunshine - Ghost

25. the Smiths - Handsome Devil

24. John Lennon - Watching The Wheels

23. A.C. Newman - On The Table

22. The Roots - The Seed V. 2.0

21. Wilco - Theologians

20. Grandaddy - Chartsengrafs

Now, I won't be surprised if very few to perhaps nobody takes me up on this one. It's a marathon, but I can say that it is very, very much worth it. It clocks in at 18 1/2 minutes, but it's a song in 5 (or really I hear 6 including a reprise) parts and it is just so cool. I enjoy the Decemberists quite a bit, but they really encapsulated every aspect of their music that I like in glowing example here. If you do give it a run I hope you like it.

you ever get those bands who really should tick all your boxes, but don't, and you can't put your finger on the reasons why?

that's the decemberists, that is.

i'm off to listen to the new midlake album.

have a great superbowl weekend, prof|||Hi Prof

Yep , me likey , the link worked for me . I really like The Engine Driver http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HG1FlsgLQ鈥?/a>

My fav tune that's over 10 mins would be Brian Eno's Discreet Music - it's 30 mins or something like that|||yes the link worked fine, good Professor

a tune of epic beauty indeed.. can we really be safely nestled in the arms of the top 20 already??

Los Angeles, I'm Yours|||Hi Prof.!

I listened to the whole 18-1/2 minutes and it was great!

My favorite long tune is Thick as a Brick by Jethro Tull.

Have a great Superbowl weekend, Go Saints!|||Hey Prof.

Playing a little bit of catch up.

The Roots song was good. I enjoy them. I saw them open for 311 years back and they were good live. I've always like Questlove.

Wilco...well, I'm obviously a huge fan of theirs. I've talked about 'em enough. Such a talented band, and I agree, AGIB is a very underrated album. Theologians is a great tune. You know one of their best songs live? Spiders. Excellent live.

The Grandaddy song was great. I've gotten into them over the past year. Jason Lytle is that dude.

The Folk Implosion song was a real good one. I'm a huge fan of Sebadoh and Lou Barlow, so naturally TFI is right up my alley. I'm still working on picking up those albums.

The Decemberists are a band I just got into recently. I picked up The Hazards of Love and thought it was a very interesting record. It really seems like he puts a ton of effort into the process and I can really appreciate that. It shows up in their work. Yet another great band from the Northwest. The 18 minute epic was good.|||Hey Prof :-)

That was entirely epic... the link was fine for me. Liked it a lot (as usual~ hey, I appreciate a wide variety of music, and something got to be REALLY annoying or clanging or tuneless or boring for me *not* to like it, at least on a first listen...)

Was wondering about their name: The Decemberists. Wonder where that comes from... all born in December... in the "Winter" of their lives... or a 'winter' point of view... I'm sure wikipedia will have the answers... but am content to wonder for now.

Happy Friday!! woohoo! yah

**edit**

Wow! the time flew by quickly. Plus I'm at home (another yah!) and doing other things, but I just read the second half of your question~ yeah, I'm one of those who answers without reading the entire thing *often* ~ and it was just ending as I finished typing the above. 18+ minutes... cool.

...and for a tune over 10 minutes... "Echoes" has and will always be a favorite of mine. Plus a lot of moe. songs. Not familiar enough yet to name names... but I've listened to one of their concerts a couple times and they're wonderful.

**edit2**

Well... I read their wiki, and as close as I can get to determining the choice of name is that they have listed under "bands that they adore": The Long Winter.

So maybe it's a seasonal kinda thing.. Also, they're from Portland, Oregon... and it's a rainy, cloudy, wintery kinda place I've heard (sorry if I'm offending anyone from there. I've never been.)|||Great songs, although my Velvet Underground choice would've been Pale Blue Eyes... Handsome Devil is definitely one of my Smiths favourites.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE The Decemberists. My favourite song that cracks the 10 minute mark is actually one of theirs - The Crane Wife 1%26amp;2 (although since it's called '1%26amp;2' does that count as two songs? It's one track on the album!) ...I love the Hazards of Love album, I think it's absolutely brilliant how they did the whole rock-opera-esque thing to tell the tragic story of Margaret and William... you have to listen to it the whole way through to get the full effect - I couldn't actually get into it until I did so. The Queen is amazing! My favourites off of that album are The Wanting Comes in Waves/Repaid and The Hazards of Love IV (The Drowned). Classic Decemberists, I also love Yankee Bayonet (I Will Be Home Then) off of the Crane Wife album. :)|||Hi Prof,

There used to be a time when I first started listening to music that I couldn't listen to a song that was over 6 minutes long. However, nowadays I could listen to a song of any length. Times change I guess.

Anyway I can honestly say that I absolutely loved that song. I really thought it was great. The singers voice reminds me of Jeremy Enigk too. I've probably said this about more than a few of the bands on the list but I'm definitely gonna look into the Decemberists. I heard the name many times before but that's the first time I've heard their music. Thanks very much for sharing!

As for my favourite song that's over 10 minutes long, it would definitely have to be 1983 (A Merman I Should Turn To Be) by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. My second favourite song of all time in fact, just simply a masterpiece.

I also heard a few tracks from their newest album, which sounded pretty good I thought. I never heard this song before now, but it was pretty awesome. Maybe the best I heard from them so far. Thanks for sharing! Favorite song over 10 min, probably Joey by Bob Dylan or a more recent one, Bros by Panda Bear.|||Hello again Prof,

I've missed answering quite a few of these...sorry about that. I've really enjoyed the whole series. You've posted alot of songs I haven't thought about in years and alot of songs I never thought about until you posted them.

Nice pick. My favorite Decemberists tune is "Yankee Bayonet (I Will Be Home Then)" I absolutely love that song. Favorite song that cracks the 10 minute mark...the first one that comes to mind is "Cowgirl in the Sand" by Neil Young but there must be a Nina Simone song I love over ten minutes.

Hope you have a nice weekend too. Mine may be buried under snow but that's actually oddly nice.
