I just got a brand new hedgehog yesterday. He's only 3 months old, much younger than my 2 year old hedgehog I had previously. He is very energetic and friendly. I want to get him some new toys, but I'm not totally sure what he would need. My previous hedgehog was happy with her cat balls and wheel. I feel like he would need more. Any suggestions?|||It sounds like you are on the right track, if you have supplied him with some small cat toys and a running wheel. The wheel is the absolute most important--it is fun for them, but more important, gives them exercise and seems calming for them.
Other than that, I have just tried different things until I hit on one that a particular hedgehog likes. They really DO have different personalities and preferences! Just make sure whatever you try is non-toxic, and does not have any little parts or fragments that could break off, cut your hedgie, or be something he could swallow and choke on.
Some things mine have liked: a large plastic trackball from an old computer mouse (they like to push it around with their noses), tiny stuffed animals that some like to cuddle up next to, larger size clean rocks with an irregular shape (like a small hill) that they can climb up and down and over (also helps keep those nails trimmed), and plastic tubes or pipes large enough for them to run through (ideally also large enough inside for a hedgehog to turn around in). Another thing many of them love is the hollow, transparent plastic balls--you put your hedgehog inside, and he can 'run' inside it, maneuvering it around the room. Some can go quite fast! Just make sure they cannot fall down stairs while they are in it.
But maybe more important, make sure you take him out frequently, cuddle with him, sit on the floor with him and let him scramble over your legs, and just enjoy each other.
